Mitchell, Dad, and I take turns sleeping. Everyone is camped out on the floor, couches, and chairs in the living room. Knowing one of these people is the killer is more than enough to make my sleep fitful. Of course, being awake isn’t much better because even though I’m working the same shift as Mitchell, he insists I arm myself with Dad’s gun. I watch my father’s chest rise and fall. At least one of us is able to rest.

“I really miss your mom’s cooking,” Mitchell says, leaning his head back against the wall where we’re sitting.

“I hear you. Just thinking about it is making me drool a little.”

“Jez probably misses us like crazy.”

“At least she has Mom and Max for company.” My parents’ house is becoming her second home due to my crazy work schedule. Jez knows we’re all one big family, though, so while I know she misses me—and Mitchell—she loves my parents, too.

“From now on, I’m telling these lunatics to schedule their crime sprees around Tuesday night dinners.” He gives a small laugh.

“I’m sure they’ll be happy to oblige.” My eyelids droop, and I let out a yawn.

Mitchell taps his shoulder. “Rest your head.”

“No. I can’t fall asleep. If anyone should be tired, it’s you. You haven’t even shut your eyes at all yet.”

“I’ll get next shift, but to be honest, I’m not sure I’ll be able to fall asleep. I’m kind of wired.”

Without my coffee, I’m seriously dragging. “I’m going to have a killer headache in the morning when I can’t drink any caffeine.”

“I packed some aspirin for you.”

Of course, he did. I’m not sure I’ve ever misjudged someone the way I misjudged Mitchell when we first met. He’s been through hell in his life, and it’s only made him a better person. I can’t help thinking that he could have gone down a different path and wound up like one of the criminals we’ve faced. I lean my head on his shoulder, which makes him smile.

The next thing I know, Mitchell is gently shaking me.

“Piper, wake up. It’s morning.”

My head is in Mitchell’s lap. I sit up and see Dad still asleep in the same place, which means Mitchell never woke him up to take his shift. “You didn’t sleep at all.”

He shakes his head. “No, which means I’m counting on us solving this case quickly so I can go home and rest.”

“No pressure,” I say, getting to my feet.

“The first order of business is moving West’s body,” Mitchell says.

He’s right. Dead bodies don’t keep well. We already have three upstairs. It makes sense to keep them together to avoid the unpleasant smell and appearance as they start to decay. Of course, it also means messing up a crime scene, and I know that’s not going to go over well with the chief.

“Admit it. It was you all along, wasn’t it?” Tara accuses Ava.

“Me? What makes you think I did this?”

“You served him that coffee. We all saw it,” Tara yells.

“Hey,” I say, moving toward them.
